Oliver Hudson spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about how he wants his 50s to be a "time of success" compared to the "grind" of his 40s

The actor and podcaster will turn 50 on Sept. 7, 2026

Hudson is set to star in the upcoming Netflix holiday rom-com A Merry Little Ex-Mas, which releases on Nov. 12

Oliver Hudson is ready to embrace a new mindset in his next decade.

In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the actor and podcaster reflected on the milestone birthday he is approaching — he'll turn 50 in September 2026 — and shared how he plans to navigate this latest chapter in his life.

"I'm 49 now and I'm pushing 50, and I think for the first time it might impact me a little bit — meaning just this idea, this revelation that holy s---, I'm 50 years old," he says, explaining that it's prompted some introspection.

"I think when you hit that age, you do start that reflection: 'Well, what have I done?' And if you're going to look back at your life, there are so many accomplishments and so many failures that have brought you to that moment," he continues, noting, "And I would say my family is my greatest accomplishment."

Hudson, the son of actress Goldie Hawn, said that when he looks back on his 40s, he recognizes the decade was "fun" — but "just a grind."

He explains, "You're just working, you're working and you're striving not just in your career, but on personal levels, just to try to be a better human being, to understand your shortcomings and try to fix them."

The Sibling Revelry podcast host tells PEOPLE that he is the type of person who is "always" thinking about how he can be better and what he can do better.

"Or, 'I don't like this about myself — how do I fix it?' " he says. "And so the 40s have been a lot of that. And then a lot of just striving for success."

Hudson noted that he considers himself a "slow burn," with his full potential not yet realized.

"My production company's called Slow Burn because that's what I feel like I am. I'm happy with my career, but at the same time, I feel like I have a ton of untapped potential as an actor, as a director, a producer in this business in general," he says, before sharing his vision for his next decade.

"I think in my 50s, I'm hoping that the family stays the same. That's been a beautiful thing for me. My kids are amazing. My wife is amazing," he tells PEOPLE, referring to wife Erinn and their three children: sons Wilder, 18, and Bodhi, 15, and daughter Rio, 12.

"As far as career goes, for me," Hudson continues, "it's just like, all right, I want my 50s to be the time of true success where I can look at what I've done moving forward in my 50s and be extremely proud of it, and just try to strive, work harder, be able to make something, do something that you feel very, very proud of."

"You're at the mercy of the business, there's no doubt," he adds. "But at the same time, you can create, and I need to get into my creative mode. So my 50s is going to be when I really open up my creativity."
