Miley Cyrus says her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, cried when she presented him with "Secrets," a song she wrote about and for him following their estrangement

Miley Cyrus hasn't seen her dad cry much — but his eyes were anything but dry on his birthday this year.

In September, the star released her latest song, "Secrets," and dedicated the track to dad Billy Ray Cyrus. It's a gesture she previously described as a "peace offering" after years of rumored estrangement between the father-daughter duo — and one that ensured Billy Ray's rarely seen waterworks were on, Miley, 32, revealed.

In an interview for the Oct. 5 episode of CBS News Sunday Morning, news correspondent Tracy Smith asked the pop superstar how her dad reacted when she gave him the song, which doubled as a birthday present as he turned 64 in August.

"My dad cried," the Something Beautiful songstress told Smith, adding that "everyone I say that to, they go, 'I remember when my dad cried.' "

"You don't see your dad cry a lot," the star continued, adding that it's something "you remember," whether they are "happy tears or painful tears." Added Miley: "I don't know if I've seen my dad cry since his dad passed away. My dad, you know, I just haven't really seen that."

The singer went on to tell Smith that the emotional ballad, which features the talents of Fleetwood Mac's Lindsey Buckingham and Mick Fleetwood, brought about "mixed emotions, because there's things that for us — me and my dad — we just kind of moved forward."

"We didn't feel that there needed to be a whole conversation, because him and I just communicate better through song," Miley explained. "And so once he got the song, it feels like it said something in a couple of minutes that would have taken, you know, maybe a family with a more structured, therapeutic dynamic a lot of sessions."

"But instead of us doing sessions," she continued, "we just do studio sessions and we send a song and we say, 'I love you.' And that feels peaceful for us." The "Secrets" singer went on to say that she doesn't "think there should be any judgment to how people make peace."

"I think if you need that kind of guidance … and I think it's important to talk about it," she then clarified. "But with me and my dad, we just have always communicated better through music with each other."

She and Billy Ray, she continued, "always communicate through songs. Half the time, we don't even say, you know, 'good morning,' 'good night,' 'how are you?' It's just YouTube. My dad knows how to use YouTube now, so that's where he gets all his music, so he just sends me music constantly. And that's the best way that we communicate for sure."

Billy Ray later echoed his daughter's sentiments on Instagram, where he shared an old photo of the pair soundtracked to their emotional 2009 duet "Butterfly Fly Away."

In the caption, he seconded what Miley said during the CBS News Sunday Morning interview, writing, "One great song can do more for the soul than a million therapy sessions. I agree! Music Changes Everything!! 🎶."

While the proud dad may have cried behind closed doors, he publicly acknowledged Miley's gift of "Secrets" by thanking her on Instagram on his birthday, Aug. 25.

Alongside a video of the "Achy Breaky Heart" singer listening to his daughter's new song on his phone, he wrote, "For my birthday, Miley gave me the gift of music and wrote me a song called Secrets and got my favorite musicians Fleetwood Mac to play on it! I love you Mile ❤️."

Less than a month later, on Sept. 19, Miley officially dropped the track, and nodded to the tension between herself and her dad while sharing a clip of it on Instagram.

"This song was written as a peace offering for someone I had lost for a time but always loved. In my experience, forgiveness and freedom are one and the same," she wrote of the track, later adding: "This song is for my dad."

Miley first teased the song in a June interview on Monica Lewinsky's podcast, stating that former tension between her and Billy Ray inspired the track, which is part of a new album she's currently working on. She also revealed that her family is now on good terms after what she described as a "dark decade" that included the divorce of parents Billy Ray and Tish in 2022.
