Julia Roberts recommends opening up to her After the Hunt costar Andrew Garfield.
When Roberts, 56, and Garfield, 42, appeared at the New York Film Festival on Friday, Sept. 26, for a press conference following a screening of their new movie with costar Ayo Edebiri and director Luca Guadagnino, the actress quipped that she considers Garfield her therapist after Garfield broke down the meaning behind After the Hunt's central storyline.
"That's where it gets really hard and fun and exciting and horrible," Garfield said, while speaking to his performance as a Yale University professor accused of assaulting a student. "And the only way we get to the healing, I think for all of us, is by traveling through all of those kind of second layer materials, like those unconscious materials, those unconscious drives. Because underneath that is the kind of interconnectedness of everything as far as I'm concerned, but the only way through is to go down through all of that horrible mishegoss that we all collectively share."
"Don't you want Andrew to be your therapist?" Roberts quipped in response. "Because he's my therapist, and I feel great."

Julia Roberts and Andrew Garfield in After the Hunt
After the Hunt stars Roberts as a Yale professor named Alma Olsson who is caught in a professional and personal predicament when her favorite student (Edebiri, 29) accuses her colleague and friend Hank (Garfield) of assault following a social gathering at Alma's residence. An official synopsis, for the movie describes it as a "gripping psychological drama," and notes that the accusation threatens to reveal "a dark secret" from Alma's own past as well. Michael Stuhlbarg and Chloë Sevigny also costar in the movie.
"Everything that is natural to Alma is unnatural to me as a human," Roberts said elsewhere during the press conference, while speaking to playing an unlikeable lead character. "And so it was interesting trying to find ways into that."

After the Hunt made its world premiere at the Venice International Film Festival on Aug. 29.
"It was a very joyful set led by Julia and Luca for sure," Garfield said of his experiencing filming the movie on Sept. 26. "And I think when you're working with material that is exploring the darker shades or the parts of our own collective humanity that we tend to want to avoid looking at, we need as much levity and brightness and community and togetherness as possible."
Following its New York Film Festival premiere, After the Hunt is in limited theaters Oct. 10 and releases everywhere Oct. 17. The New York Film Festival runs from Sept. 26 through Oct. 13.
