The World Championship started on a sombre note on Sunday night as it was announced that popular Sky Sports commentator Wayne Mardle was absent due to the death of his wife, Donna. Former player Mardle, who has been the main voice of Sky Sports' coverage of darts for many years, is not expected to attend any of this year's tournament at London's Alexandra Palace. Sky Sports presenter Emma Paton appeared emotional as she revealed Donna had died at the age of 52.
