English rugby chiefs considered moving their home stadium from Twickenham to Birmingham as part of a radical relocation plan. The RFU also looked into buying a 50 per cent share of Wembley before opting to stay put in south-west London, using funds from their new Allianz naming deal to redevelop the ground. The project to refurbish the dated stadium will cost hundreds of millions, but London's booming hospitality market convinced RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney not to sell the existing site.
