NEED TO KNOW

  • The emotional reveal, shared on TikTok, went viral as the boy burst into tears, realizing he’d get to attend Game 5 of the playoffs

  • His mom saved for months to afford the tickets, calling it a once-in-a-lifetime experience for her son and husband

For 12-year-old Carmelo, his birthday gifts already seemed perfect.

The die-hard New York Knicks fan had spent the morning celebrating at home with his family, surrounded by racing-themed decorations inspired by his love of Formula 1 (though he repped his favorite team with a Knicks jersey). He opened presents, smiled through every surprise and never complained when one item he had quietly hoped for — a pair of Knicks shorts — never appeared.

What he didn’t know was that his mom,Angelisa Rios, 47, had one final surprise waiting.

Hidden inside a blue gift bag alongside a pair of Knicks socks was a printed sheet of paper revealing the real present: playoff tickets to Game 5 at Madison Square Garden for Carmelo and his dad, Felix.

Even more shocking? His father had absolutely no idea.

“I told my husband to sit next to him because I had a big surprise and he would want to see the gift up close,” Angelisa, a 47-year-old professional photographer from New York City, tells PEOPLE exclusively. “He had NO IDEA the tickets were remotely even an option.”

At first, both father and son assumed the bag simply contained the Knicks shorts Carmelo had wanted.

“Carmelo shows the socks, and the white paper falls out,” Angelisa recalls. “It’s only after Carmelo sees the words on the paper that his dad catches on, and the rest is history.”

The emotional moment, which Angelisa later shared onTikTok, quickly went viral as viewers watched the 12-year-old burst into tears after realizing he’d be attending the biggest Knicks game of his life.

“When Carmelo finally saw that he was being gifted the ticket of a lifetime, he sobbed,” Angelisa says. “He is a child that wears his emotions on his sleeve, and I love that for him.”

“He’s been exposed to celebrities, and he’s unfazed by that,” she adds. “His tears were because he loves the Knicks so much and he loves being a New Yorker.”

Carmelo’s connection to the team runs especially deep. He was named after former Knicks starCarmelo Anthony, and Angelisa says both her son and husband are lifelong fans.

“My husband has been a Knicks fan since birth,” she says. “The Knicks, of course, have not won a championship since 1973. He was born in 1977, so to have our son be a huge Knicks fan is so emotional for him as a dad.”

Planning the surprise took weeks.

Angelisa says she reached out to friends who were fellow Knicks fans for help figuring out the safest way to purchase playoff tickets online. Although she initially hoped to attend the game herself, the soaring prices forced her to make a sacrifice.

“I originally planned on going as well, but after seeing ticket prices I decided to forgo my ticket and get them in a better section,” she says.

Ultimately, she spent $1,752 on the two tickets for Game 5. The mother of two says she had quietly been saving money for months in case the Knicks made a deep playoff run.

“We are a family that values experiences over material things,” she says. “This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience for him and for his dad.”

The gamble, however, came with uncertainty.

Angelisa specifically purchased tickets for Game 5 — which at the time was only scheduled “if necessary,” depending on how the series unfolded.

The New York Knicks are currently leading the Eastern Conference Finals against the Cleveland Cavaliers 3-0, and if they win Monday night, they’ll advance to the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999 — meaning there would be no Game 5 at all.

“Although I wanted the Knicks to sweep, I figured one win from the Cavs would secure a Game 5, and the Knicks could win it all with my son and his dad in the building,” she says.

“I know the price difference between Game 5 and tickets to a Finals game,” she adds. “I don’t know what tonight holds, but he wants his team to win regardless of how it’s done and what game it happens in.”

“The price difference does scare me, but I will cross that bridge when I get there,” she continues. “I just want him in the building to experience that magic.”

While the ticket price itself shocked many viewers online, Angelisa says the moment represented something much bigger for her family.

“What I didn’t record was a moment where my husband and I said, ‘We didn’t grow up with this financial opportunity. We didn’t,’ ” she shares. “To provide this for my son and his dad is deep-rooted and for our inner child as well.”

For Angelisa, the viral reaction to the video has also been emotional to witness.

“My career is to capture emotion. To share. To make people feel,” she says. “I know how badly the world needs joy right now, and sports bring people together.”

As comments poured in from fellow Knicks fans, parents and New Yorkers alike, Angelisa says she was touched by how many people connected to the family’s story.

Still, she says the biggest lesson she hopes her children take away from the experience has nothing to do with basketball — or money.

“I want them to know that the meaning of being rich has nothing to do with finances,” she says. “The definition is in these moments where you are abundant with love and family.”

“We are rich,” she adds, “not in the sense of money, but because we have happiness and appreciation for one another and understand that life truly is a moment.”
