Long-time Creighton coach Greg McDermott is reportedly calling it a career. The 61-year-old will reportedly retire at the end of the season, according to ESPN.
His decision marks the end of a 16-year run with Creighton.
Associate head coach Alan Huss is expected to take over for McDermott, per ESPN. Huss has spent time as a head coach and assistant at various schools over his career, and is no stranger to Creighton. Huss served as an assistant under McDermott between 2017 and 2023. Huss then left to coach High Point through the 2024-25 season.

At that point, Huss returned to Creighton as an assistant under McDermott once again. But his contract with the team made him the associate head coach, and signaled he would replace McDermott when the coach decided to retire. At the time Huss was brought back, there were rumors suggesting McDermott would step down in the next year or so.

Huss was far from the only assistant who developed into a head coach under McDermott. He has a fairly lengthy coaching tree, with at least nine assistants who went on to become head coaches for college programs.
McDermott's decision ends a 25-year coaching career. He started that career with Northern Iowa, where he went 90-63 and took the team to the NCAA tournament three times in five seasons.
While the team was successful, McDermott resigned from his position in 2006 and eventually joined Iowa State. In four years with the school, McDermott went just 59-68.
In 2010, he joined Creighton, where he would remain for the next 16 seasons. His tenure with the team was mostly filled with success, as Creighton made the NCAA tournament 10 times. In 2023, he led the team to the Elite Eight, where they lost to San Diego State by just one point.
The team disappointed during the 2025-26 season, going 15-17 and failing to earn a spot in the NCAA tournament. Instead, the team was selected to play in the College Basketball Crown event, where they'll take on Rutgers on April 2.
