Hoyeon is makeup-free as she checks in to our video call from her apartment in Seoul, wearing a loose khaki T-shirt from the Japanese brand Kapital, her naturally wavy hair scraped back in a messy ponytail. This isn't the first time we've met—I interviewed the 31-year-old actress and model a few months before her 2022 win at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, when she was living through the whirlwind of Squid Game success.
Back then, Hoyeon seemed thrilled about the show but also a little shell-shocked. "Everything was just so chaotic and hectic," she recalls now. "I felt like I had to learn on the fly and improvise every moment. But now I have a lot more room to think, to reflect on myself and learn about myself. I've become more used to the life of an actor."

Hoyeon's busy acting life includes two projects expected next year: the Korean sci-fi film Hope with Alicia Vikander and Michael Fassbender, and the psychological thriller The Hole with The White Lotus star Theo James. The first time that Vikander met Hoyeon was at a Louis Vuitton fashion show, when she told her that she'd been bingeing Squid Game with her husband (Fassbender), like the rest of the world. Vikander praises the depth that Hoyeon brought to her role, saying, "Onscreen, she [transmits] an immense amount of rawness, which is the kind of acting that I like and admire—people who dare to be kind of naked and show their human side; to be able to be extremely open toward the lens and camera. She's a brave actress."

Hoyeon is also a new face of La Beauté Louis Vuitton, the house's first beauty collection, created by legendary makeup artist Dame Pat McGrath. "The palette, the packaging—it just makes one's heart flutter," Hoyeon sighs dreamily. Her first runway show with Louis Vuitton was nearly a decade ago, three years after claiming second place on Korea's Next Top Model. "Louis Vuitton and I, we go way back—we have a lot of history together," she enthuses, then corrects herself. "We are still making history together."

In fact, a few weeks after we speak, she debuts as a star of the line's new fall 2025 fashion campaign alongside Emma Stone. "Nicolas [Ghesquière, the brand's artistic director for women's collections] is one of my best supporters," she says. "One of the things he said that really stuck with me was, 'Hoyeon, young models are learning that they can do both modeling and acting by looking at you. That's helping them know they don't have to choose one out of the two.'"

Those words were a balm, coming at just the right time for Hoyeon, who was second-guessing whether she could balance her two callings. "It helped me to believe in myself and follow my instincts," she says, looking thoughtfully off into the distance. "There was a time when I was getting in my head thinking about these things." These days, she's much more serene, more self-assured in her own talents, and no longer the lonely young woman who cried on the transatlantic flight that moved her from Seoul to New York. She's leapt from modeling to Hollywood, taking it all in her stride. "I don't want to call this necessarily a jump, but I think that I'm going on a great journey, step by step," she says. We're just lucky to be joining her for the ride.
