Despite a government shutdown on its way to becoming the longest-ever, President Donald Trump headed to Asia on Oct. 24 to meet with world leaders and attempt to resolve a trade war he started with China.
Trump left the White House aboard Air Force One night en route to his first stop, Malaysia.
The president and the airplane stopped at the Al Udeid Air Base, the regional headquarters for the U.S. military, to refuel, in Qatar. Trump welcomed Qatar's Emir Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani and Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani on board and thanked Qatar for its efforts in the ceasefire deal in the Gaza, Al-Jazeera reported.
In May, Trump accepted a luxury Boeing 747 jet from Qatar that will serve as Air Force One after extensive renovations and then transfer to his presidential library after his term ends. The $400 million gift drew bipartisan criticism for its ethical and national security implications.
The overseas trip comes as the second-term Republican president threatens to nearly triple tariffs on Chinese imports on Nov. 1 unless he reaches a new trade deal with the country. China's retaliatory taxes have halted key U.S. imports such as soybeans and restricted the sale of rare earth minerals crucial for electronics such as cellphones and computers.
Trump, during his trip, is hoping to strike a deal with Jinping, who he will meet in South Korea on Thursday, Oct. 26.

Trump will kick off his Asia tour in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, on the morning, local time, of Oct. 26 where he will participate in the 47th ASEAN Summit, a regional organization that aims to promote economic growth and cultural development and enhance security cooperation between member states, according to its charter.
While in Malaysia, Trump will witness Thailand and Cambodia sign a ceasefire deal, which he helped broker, Reuters reported. In July, border tensions between the two neighbors erupted into a deadly five-day conflict, their most intense in recent history, leaving dozens of people dead and displacing about 300,000. Malaysia helped secure an initial ceasefire on July 28, aided by calls from Trump to the leaders of both countries.

After Malaysia, Trump will head to Japan, where he will arrive on Monday, Oct. 27 and hold meetings with the new Prime Minister of Japan, Sanae Takaichi.
The third and last stop of Trump's visit to Asia will be Busan, South Korea on Wednesday, Oct. 29. Once there, Trump is set to meet with South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
On the same day, the president is set to meet leaders of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and speak at a luncheon as well as participate in a US-APEC leaders working dinner, White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said on Thursday, Oct. 23.
A day later, on Thursday, Oct. 30, Trump is set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping before returning to Washington D.C.
