The Army of the Dead star, 50, reflected on his career ahead of his directorial debut with upcoming thriller Shell Game

"I'm really excited about how it's all coming together," Rossi tells PEOPLE

Theo Rossi is delighted with his achievements in the film industry!

While attending Clarins' Golden Hour Event in partnership with V Magazine at Waller Creek Boathouse in Austin, Texas, on Oct. 18, the actor, 50, spoke exclusively with PEOPLE about the work he's done leading up to his directorial debut.

Rossi's upcoming heist movie, Shell Game, delves into the reunion of a crew of thieves after years apart, according to Deadline. They take on a high-stakes heist while faced with old grudges and new enemies.

"I've produced my last six films. I've been writing, a few films that I wrote have just come out and, now, this was kind of the next step," Rossi tells PEOPLE of his directorial debut. "I started from under the bottom in this business as an extra, commercials."

"I've been doing this for a long time now, and directing was always kind of where I wanted to end up, so I guess, in some weird way, I'm almost there," he continues. "So it'll be really cool. I'm really excited about how it's all coming together."

The actor reveals the script was inspired by a starry thriller from 1995 that he loved watching.

"One of my favorite movies of all time, if not top three, is a movie called Heat by Michael Mann, with Robert De Niro and Al Pacino and Val Kilmer, and a million other great actors," Rossi tells PEOPLE.

"I just love exploring the underworld," he continues. "It's something I grew up in and I like... Because when you're doing a heist in that high-tension situation, relationships are really tested.

"So I like to see who people really become under pressure," he adds.

In addition to directing, the Army of the Dead star is producing the movie alongside Chris Dent, Nicholas Carmona, James Crewe and Tommy DeNucci, per Deadline. Principal photography is scheduled to take place in Texas and New Mexico this fall.

Shell Game comes after Rossi recently starred in Netflix's Carry-On movie and HBO's The Penguin.

The filmmaker is also a busy family man, sharing sons, Arlo, 8, and Kane, 10, with his wife, Meghan McDermott.

While attending Clarins' party last year, Rossi revealed to PEOPLE that his youngest son loves to play different characters and embraces the opportunity at Halloween.

"He wears different costumes. He does multiple changes," Rossi said. "He's really big into special effects, and he's 7. He has all these [fake] scars. He does these fake tattoos."

"I've had him sit down with special effects makeup artists and he loves doing it," Rossi added. "He's a makeup artist in the making."
