Fast food chain Steak n' Shake said it plans to install massive American flags outside of all its locations nationwide

The move is designed to show the brand's support for "American values and traditions"

The decision has garnered mixed reactions on social media

Steak n' Shake has begun installing the "tallest and biggest" American flags possible outside of its restaurants in a move to support "American values and traditions."

The Indianapolis-based burger chain shared the news in a post on X on Saturday, Oct. 4, writing, "The flag installations have begun at Steak n Shake. Every Steak n Shake is getting the tallest and biggest American flag that local governments will allow!"

"Steak n Shake proudly supports American values and traditions," the company added, while also sharing a photo of staff standing under a large American flag.

PEOPLE reached out to the Steak 'n Shake corporate office on Sunday, Oct. 5, but was unable to reach a representative for the company.

The move has garnered mixed reactions on social media.

"I'm ordering from there tomorrow!" commented X CEO and SpaceX founder Elon Musk.

"This is awesome! Thank you!" another user wrote.

Others were more critical of the decision.

"What are American values and traditions? Fast food beef and obesity?" one person queried.

Another X user said, "The timely pandering will be studied one day. Why now? Why even mention the size of a flag? My family has flown a flag since the '30s, well before I was born. We didn't need to pander to be patriotic."

Steak 'n Shake, which predominantly has locations across the Midwest, made news earlier this year for criticizing restaurant chain Cracker Barrel's decision to change its traditional logo — which Cracker Barrel ultimately reversed after a wave of public outcry.

"Heritage is what got Cracker Barrel this far, and now the CEO wants to just scrape it all away," Steak 'n Shake stated in an Aug. 21 X post. "At Steak 'n Shake, we take pride in our history, our families, and American values. All are welcome. We will never market ourselves away from our past in a cheap effort to gain the approval of trend seekers."

Hours after the post received more than 5 million impressions, Steak 'n Shake doubled down on its stance, replying, "Fire the CEO! Thank you for your attention to this matter," to a post that accused Cracker Barrel of losing its "soul."
