Sally Struthers has been dazzling audiences since the early 1970s
The actress, 78, tells PEOPLE about her appreciation for fans from different times in her career
Struthers is currently playing Mrs. Peck in An Old-Fashioned Family Murder at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, N.J.
Sally Struthers loves having fans from every generation of her career.
Speaking with PEOPLE about her role as Mrs. Peck in An Old-Fashioned Family Murder, the actress, 78, admits that many fans from her early career assume she's retired since most of her work nowadays is on the stage.
"I've been doing these plays and national tours, and yet people come up to me on the street — they're always taller, so I'm always looking up at them — and they always sound a little obsequious and they say things like, 'Oh, it's so good to see you, dear. We don't see you on television anymore. We miss you. Are you retired?'" she laughs.
Struthers continues, "Then I go, 'No.' They say, 'Well, we don't see you.' 'Well, that doesn't mean I'm not working. I do theater all over the country.' And they'll say, 'Oh, well, we don't go to the theater.' "

Laughing, she adds, "I said, 'But you're just assuming I don't work anymore. I'm trying to tell you I work all the time!' "
That said, Struthers has returned to the small screen in a bigger way, starring with Ted Danson in Netflix's A Man on the Inside. The role came nearly 54 years after she landed her breakout role as Gloria Stivic in All in the Family, for which she won two Emmy Awards.
While her career began over five decades ago, Struthers notes that she has fans of every age thanks to the lasting legacy of so many of her shows.

"It's funny, a 20-year-old young lady will approach me and call me Babette because of Gilmore Girls. And then her mother, if she's with her, will go, 'No, darling, she's Gloria.' And now people are starting to call me Virginia from the Netflix series," she says.
Struthers jokes that she will "answer to anything" — even people she has no relation to.
"People have come up and said, 'Oh, aren't you Shelley Winters?' And I go, 'Yes, of course, I'll sign that for you.' And then I turn to my sister and I say, 'A, she's dead. And B, I've just been mistaken for Shelley Winters. Oh my God, somebody shoot me,'" she laughs.

Struthers gets to flex her funny bone once again as Mrs. Peck in An Old-Fashioned Family Murder, feeling at home on the stage at the George Street Playhouse in New Brunswick, N.J.
"I love doing theater because it's not for sissies. Because if you're on a movie set and you're doing a three-page scene, it's going to take all day to shoot," she says. "You only have three pages of dialogue. You can learn that. And if you mess up, someone just yells, 'Cut, let's start over.' And it's fine, no big deal."
She continues, "But when you're on stage, you have to know an entire performance from beginning to end without stopping unless there's an intermission. And I defy most actors making a living in film being able to learn all that dialogue and put it into their brain and their heart and go out without a net and do it."

"No one's going to yell, 'Cut.' You're just going to have an omelet on your face if you don't know what to say next. You make it real and make it funny. And so, I love doing it because I feel like it's the Olympics of acting."
Struthers says she'll "always go back to" theater, since "it's always there for me."
"There are always offers. And I've gotten to the point at 78 years old where they don't even make me audition anymore. It's the most wonderful, delicious existence in the world," she tells PEOPLE. "That's one of the payments for getting older, is if people know your work, they actually don't make you audition because auditions suck."
Fans can see Struthers as Mrs. Peck in An Old-Fashioned Family Murder through Nov. 2.
