After learning that Cardi B had reached Patriots WAG status when she announced that she was expecting with player Stefon Diggs, fellow WAG Victoria Gibson invited her to tailgate with the rest of the team

"We were thinking about the tailgate and how much fun it was going to be, and that's when we were like, 'Oh, we should invite her," Gibson tells PEOPLE

Gibson, the wife of Patriots running back Antonio Gibson, opens up about the unstable life of a WAG, the community she's found on the team and how she and Antonio always make sure family comes first

New England Patriots WAG Victoria Gibson is eager to welcome Cardi B to the tailgate!

On Sept. 17, the Grammy-winning rapper announced on CBS Mornings that she was pregnant with her fourth child, her first with boyfriend and Patriots star Stefon Diggs.

While the world sent in their congratulations, Gibson — who is the wife of Patriots running back Antonio Gibson — had another thought on her mind. In a video she and fellow WAG Jayda Kamryn Hawkins shared to Instagram in the wake of the big news, she invited the performer to a tailgate they were throwing that coming weekend.

"Hey Cardi, it's two of your future favorite WAGs," Gibson said in the video. "A lot of people are looking forward to meeting you."

In an interview with PEOPLE, Gibson reflects on the viral clip and how she hopes to bring Cardi B into the WAG circle soon.

"We were thinking about the tailgate and how much fun it was going to be, and that's when we were like, 'Oh, we should invite her," says Gibson. "We want to extend that invitation to everybody that's part of the family — part of the community — who wants to come, so that's why we wanted to make sure she knew."

"We didn't know how to get in touch with her," admits Gibson about the rapper. "I don't know if she's seen it."

Even without Cardi in attendance, Gibson says the tailgate she threw was a huge success: Roughly 50 people involved in the organization came out to celebrate ahead of the game, shared food, danced to music and made TikToks together. But if Cardi does want to come in the future, she adds, "I'll embrace her with open arms."

"She might be like, 'Girl, get off of me, but that's just who I am,' " laughs Gibson. "She has nothing to be nervous about if she's got me!"

When Gibson first entered the wild world of a WAG — connecting with her husband-to-be via Instagram — she didn't even know the name of his NFL team.

"I had to Google what 'Redskins' was because it sounded really familiar," she tells PEOPLE. "I only attended Super Bowl parties for the Rotel dip and for the halftime show. So no, I didn't know anything about football."

After four seasons with the Washington Commanders (called the Redskins when he first joined), Antonio was signed by the Patriots, and their family picked up and moved from Washington, D.C., to Foxborough, Mass. Now a member of the team's WAG community, says Gibson, she's joined bible study for the team and brings her kids to team picnics, complete with blowups and face painting.

"They do a lot of nice things for us," she says of the team.

On game day, Gibson typically wrangles her young kids and then heads down to Gillette Stadium, where the Patriots play, to meet up with the rest of the team's WAGs. During the game, she usually cheers for Antonio from the stadium's family section, and then she heads to the family dining area when her husband is finished playing for a team meal.

Though Gibson says she's "extremely blessed and fortunate" by the luxuries she has — and the fact that their family has only had to move once to follow Antonio's career — she says the "unstableness" of the life of a WAG can also sometimes leave her "a little on edge."

Continues Gibson: "I think about it — is this the year we have to move again? You could have to go from the East Coast to the West Coast."

Still, Gibson notes, her family will always come first, and she and Antonio, who wed earlier this year, have agreed they wouldn't split the family up if he were moved to another team. And the family is still able to carve out time to spend together even during the madness of the regular season schedule.

The day after Antonio's record-breaking 90-yard kickoff return touchdown earlier this season, for example, he, Victoria and the kids drove out to the iconic Big E state fair for some family fun.

"We love spending time with our kids," Victoria says, adding that she and her husband have settled into a quieter domestic life in the past few years. "That's the kind of thing we do."
