Lane Kiffin thinks the days of a singular team ruling the SEC are done now that the conference has 16 teams.
The Ole Miss coach told ESPN that "in my opinion, the dynasties are over" in the conference as the SEC moves to having nine conference games in 2026 and beyond. Ole Miss is No. 4 in the current AP Top 25 and the highest-ranked SEC team in the poll.
The Rebels moved up to No. 4 after beating then-No. 4 LSU in Week 5. With Alabama's win at Georgia last week, just five of the 16 teams in the conference were undefeated before October began and that group included teams like Missouri and Vanderbilt.
Seasons like this could start to be the norm, according to Kiffin. From ESPN:
"You're going to have really good teams going 8-4 because we're going to play nine conference teams, including five on the road," Kiffin said. "The conference has never been this balanced, and it never used to have Texas and Oklahoma, two top-10 teams and two of the hardest places in the country to play.
"My concern for the programs and for the coaches is that fans aren't going to be able to get used to the numbers being different, the wins and losses. If you're a program that's used to being a nine- or 10-win team and you go 7-5, your fans are going to think the team is terrible and the coach is terrible. But you might have lost four road games at Georgia, Florida, LSU and Alabama."
It's hard to argue with Kiffin's thinking. As players can transfer without sitting out a year, are set to be paid directly by schools as part of the new revenue sharing agreement, and also able to capitalize on their own image rights for endorsement deals, college football may be embarking on a new era of parity and the SEC could be a prime example.
The conference has 10 teams ranked after the first five weeks of the season, even though five of those teams already have a loss. There are a ton of really good teams in the conference, but there may not be a great one or two that's head and shoulders over the rest of the league.
Could that hurt the league's playoff chances? The SEC had three teams in the playoff in 2024 to the Big Ten's four. But if the SEC's parity could ultimately cost the league a playoff spot or two, we'll at least be rewarded with an unpredictable regular season.
