Kacie McIntosh and Chris Paul on 'Love Is Blind' -

Ally Simpson, the Executive Producer of the Love Is Blind season 9 reunion, tells PEOPLE how the exciting episode came together

The reunion kicked off with a performance from Myles Smith and later featured a cameo from NBA legend Chris Paul

Simpson says the goal of the show is to prove that, love, and the premise of LIB, is relatable to everybody

If you can't win at the game of love, try a game of basketball!

Netflix's season 9 Love Is Blind reunion dropped on Wednesday, Oct. 29, and among the many shocking revelations throughout the episode were cameos from unexpected faces: NBA player Chris Paul and artist Myles Smith. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, Executive Producer Ally Simpson dishes on how these special guests made it to the LIB stage and the impact she hopes it has on the show's audience.

"With the reunion, each season we try to make it more and more of, almost an event, where you don't know what might happen," Simpson explains. "When you think about pop culture and you think about the biggest pillars in pop culture, that's love and relationships, and music and sports, and it felt for us, like there's a really organic way to bring all of those things together."

When someone suggested incorporating Paul for an athletic element of the episode, Simpson thought it was the perfect way to appeal to a variety of viewers and tap into a memorable bonding moment between contestants Kacie and Patrick.

"It was cool that Kacie and Patrick had this basketball connection in the pods and we could bring [Paul] in and he's a fan of the show, and that all felt very natural and organic to make happen," she notes.

In the scene with the Los Angeles Clippers point guard, he shows up to host a free throw competition between Kacie and Patrick to settle their ongoing debate about who gets to keep the engagement ring when Kacie called things off just days after the proposal. Kacie ultimately won, and Patrick (after teasing) gave it back to her onstage.

"It's this idea that there could be a woman sitting there watching Love Is Blind: The Reunion, and all of a sudden, Chris Paul's there, and her husband's like, 'Oh my God, is that Chris Paul?'" Simpson adds. "It continues to bring in who is drawn to the show and making the reunion really fun for everybody. So I think we're just excited that each reunion, we're able to attract both."

Myles Smith on 'Love Is Blind'

When it came to the decision to have Smith sing "Nice to Meet You" as the main cast members were introduced while walking down a flight of stairs onto the stage, Simpson points to the success of the previous reunion's musical moment in March.

"The music performance last season was a big hit and we wanted to carry that through," she says of the season 8 reunion where Alex Warren sang "Ordinary," which went on to hit No. 1 on Billboard's "Hot 100" shortly after.

"We were lucky enough to get Myles Smith on board to perform at this reunion," Simpson says. "What was cool is, with the success of the last one, we really had the interest of virtually every major label coming to us saying, 'Hey, can we give you some names and some possibilities?' And Myles Smith, for us, it's a mix of both the artist and the song. I think we knew we wanted to do a big, exciting open with the music performance, and so he's just a really great guy and a really terrific artist."

She continues: "We also felt like the song was something that just felt celebratory and a great kickoff to the reunion. It's a song that's actually been out a little bit and continued to rise in the charts, and so we're excited to see if giving it this platform is able to give it a real push that I think it deserves. So we were grateful to get him in the end."
