It's been 10 years since Poot first graced our Tumblr feeds. Now, Demi Lovato is bringing the viral meme back to life for Halloween.
Lovato, who recently announced her upcoming North American tour, got into the Halloween spirit and debuted an unexpected costume that the chronically online remember far too well: Her identical twin sister, Poot. Poot, for those unfamiliar, is entirely fictional and is actually just an edited, distorted photo of Lovato that was taken by a fan in 2014. The photo began circulating online in 2015 and was even listed as one of Time magazine's "most influential" fictional characters of that year.
"happy halloween and happy one week of intd!!!" Lovato wrote on Instagram on Thursday, referencing her newly released album, It's Not That Deep. "been so locked in this era thought i'd let pootvato out 🔒🤍"

On Instagram, Lovato shared a few professional photos of herself as Poot, along with a TikTok video set to Sabrina Carpenter's "House Tour," in which Lovato (as Poot) tries to escape from the basement. Lovato also included a time-lapse that showcases her glam team bringing Poot to life.
The original photo of Poot was widely circulated on Tumblr, where an absurd and ultra-specific origin story was established: Poot, the lesser-known Lovato sister, had been locked in a basement her whole life. That viral photo of Poot, so the story goes, documented the first time she ever went outside.
Lovato has leaned into the meme in the past. Back in April, the "Let You Go" singer poked fun at herself on TikTok when she posted a video with text that read, "When someone asks me to let Poot out of the basement…" Lovato also celebrated her 31st birthday with a cake featuring a photo of Poot.
The "Frequency" singer wasn't always amused by Poot's virality. Lovato initially thought the photo was real before eventually learning it had actually been edited.
"When Poot went viral, that actually sucked because I thought that was a real picture of me," she previously told Harper's Bazaar. "And I was like, 'Oh, no. That's a really bad angle.' But Poot was photoshopped. Later, I felt better about it because I realized that wasn't my face."
