The singer acknowledged there was "only so much" she could've done as a teenager
Demi Lovato is opening up about how the early days of her career affected her relationship with her younger sister Madison, who at the same time was dealing with a difficult TV role.
Lovato, 33, appeared on the Las Culturistas podcast on Wednesday, Oct. 22, and discussed things she she would have done differently regarding her sister Madison De La Garza's childhood role on Desperate Housewives.
"I think at the time, I wish I had been a little bit more protective, to be honest. Because that role was, I think, really challenging for her at such a young age," Lovato said. "And I think I had been distracted by my own stuff going on, unfortunately, and so I live with some regret in that aspect."
De La Garza, 23, played Juanita Solis on Desperate Housewives, the mischievous young daughter of Eva Longoria's Gabrielle, from 2008 to 2012. During that same time period, Lovato's career took off; she starred in two Camp Rock movies and Sonny with a Chance on Disney Channel, and released her first three albums.
The "Fast" singer — who will release her new album It's Not That Deep on Oct. 24 — admitted there was "only so much you can do" as a teenager, as the entire family was new to the industry and had just moved to Los Angeles to explore new opportunities.

"I think I do have a little bit of regret because I think it was a difficult role for her," Lovato said of her sister playing Juanita, whose weight was often discussed on the show. "There was a lot of scrutiny in the show about her body and I hate that. But I think she's so strong and she's so amazing. She turned out so great and I'm so proud of her. She did incredible work on that show. She was iconic."
When hosts Bowen Yang and Matt Rogers said that they hope Lovato doesn't carry her regret over her sister "too heavily," the star said she has an "interesting perspective" on things today.
"We talked about it in my Child Star documentary, and she opened up and was vulnerable with me then, and I think in that moment, that's when I realized the effect the show had on her," Lovato said. "But I've always been protective over her. She's my baby sister and she always will be."
De La Garza appeared in Child Star, a 2024 documentary co-directed by Lovato that interviewed a number of former child stars on their experiences in showbiz.

During the film, Lovato asks her sister about the body-shaming she experienced on the show, and how it correlated with their mother's and Lovato's own eating disorders.
"I'm kind of realizing it now, but at the time, I don't think any of us truly realized that what was happening with us was an eating disorder. I don't know. It makes me a little sad that this was something that we were all battling with individually while standing next to each other," De La Garza said. "Especially because that was originally the focus of my role on Desperate Housewives, and then eventually turned into the focus of my life."
She added that because of their busy schedules, they didn't get to enjoy "summers as sisters" once the family moved to Los Angeles from Texas. Lovato told her she'd love to "make up for lost time."
