A 5-year-old child was seriously injured after being struck by an off-duty Rhode Island State Police trooper.
The driver later returned and is not being charged following what authorities described as an "unfortunate accident."
On Thursday, Oct. 2, around 3 p.m. local time, officials responded to the accident on Boylston Street in Warwick, Patch, CBS affiliate WPRI and NBC affiliate WBTS reported.
Investigators from the Warwick Police Department reviewed video footage, which showed the vehicle heading east on Boylston Street with two children standing alongside the street. As the vehicle drove by, the child exited a slightly raised driveway while lying face down on a skateboard, police told Patch.
"The victim and skateboard then enter the roadway directly into the path of the vehicle," police said, according to the outlet.
The vehicle did not change speed during the accident, nor did it show "abnormal or evasive measures" following impact or damage when it was inspected later, according to Patch.
When officials arrived, the vehicle was no longer at the scene, and the child was transported to a hospital in Providence with critical, but non-life-threatening injuries, Patch reported.
Shortly after the child was hit, the Warwick Police Department posted a photo of a silver pickup truck on Facebook, requesting information from witnesses who had seen the vehicle near Palmer Ave.
Warwick Police Captain Matthew Higgins said in an email to the Boston Globe that the driver is a state police trooper.
The vehicle has since been towed and is being held during the ongoing investigation, WPRI reported. The driver was "extremely distraught" over the crash and was "interviewed at length" before he was released without charges, according to the outlet.
The off-duty trooper showed "no indication" that he "knew he struck a child or that he knowingly left the scene," and later returned to the area, according to Patch.

"The investigation, to this point, indicates this is simply an unfortunate accident," police said, according to the outlet.

As of Friday, Oct. 3, the child was still at the hospital healing from injuries sustained in the crash, Patch reported.
The Warwick Police Department and Rhode Island State Police did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's requests for further comment.
