It's a big year for "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," as the beloved cult-classic celebrates its 50th anniversary.
Released on Sept. 26, 1975, "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" may not have been an instant hit with viewers. Fast-forward decades later, and the film serves as a bold representation of queer celebration, especially during the spooky season.
The film is based on Richard O'Brien's original screenplay, "The Rocky Horror Show," which debuted at the Royal Court Theatre in London in June 1973. It arrived in the United States the following year, opening at the Roxy Theatre in Los Angeles in March 1974. Filming for the "picture show" began in October of that same year.
Perhaps "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is best known for its musical numbers, including "Time Warp," "Sweet Transvestite," and, of course, the opening track, "Science Fiction/Double Feature."
