Charmed season 3 ends on a cliffhanger, although its stars felt the episode, "All Hell Breaks Loose," was full of plot holes.

After discussing the circumstances surrounding the making of this particular season finale on a previous episode, Charmed stars Brian Krause and Drew Fuller recapped the episode on their podcast The House of Halliwell. The actors felt the time loop storyline in "All Hell Breaks Loose" was not well executed.

"The saving grace of this episode is everyone is so dang good, you know?" Fuller said. "Everyone is just on their A-game from an acting standpoint. We might not like the story, but imagine if people were phoning in."

"All Hell Breaks Loose" shows the Halliwell sisters fighting a demon, getting exposed for magic, and losing Piper (Holly Marie Combs). Then, the season finale ends with time reversing to the beginning of the episode, where Piper and Prue (Shannen Doherty) are left mortally wounded.

The actors said that the episode was one of their least favorites but commended the late Doherty for her work on it. "All Hell Breaks Loose" was directed by Doherty and served as her last appearance on Charmed.

Doherty was later unceremoniously fired and her character Prue Halliwell was killed off. The House of Halliwell hosts felt that this drama could not be separated from their viewing of the season 3 finale. They added that "under less-skilled directorial hands," the show's future would have been in danger.

"Everyone did their job, believed in the story and the script, and trusted Shannen and her directing," Fuller said. "And the performances are all incredible. And it looks great. It's just the story wasn't there to back up the performances."

The House of Halliwell cohost Combs, who played Piper Halliwell on the series, was absent for the rewatch. She had said in the preceding podcast that it was too difficult for her to sit through the season 3 finale. Combs previously said Doherty's ousting was "sick and twisted."

Charmed stars Doherty, Combs, and Alyssa Milano had been locked in an ongoing feud before Doherty's death. Combs had said that Milano gave producers an ultimatum: Keep her or Doherty. Milano denied the claims, leading to criticism from Combs and Doherty.

The Beverly Hills, 90210 star died of cancer at 53 in 2024.
