We've made it to the end of a crazy week in weather, but that doesn't mean we're done tracking the big stories that have dominated the week. Check back frequently this morning as we bring you more weather coverage on all the interesting things we're seeing.

(11:55 a.m. EDT) Rare 'Black Moon' Tonight

From lead editor Jenn Jordan:

Tonight's sky will hide a rare surprise, but you'll have to stay up pretty late to see it. A "Black Moon" will appear at around 2 a.m. EDT, which means it's the third new moon in a season that has four. This only happens about every three years!

You won't actually get to see the Black Moon, since its sunlit side will be facing away from the Earth, but it will make for some very special stargazing as the sky will be exceptionally dark.

We have all your tips and tricks for making the most of tonight's event right here.

(11:40 a.m. EDT) Wildfires Continue To Burn In Spain

A brutal wildfire season is still blazing in Spain today. Officials estimate that 1,475 square miles have burned in the country this year, leaving four dead and many rural villages devastated.

While the high temperatures that were fueling the fires have dropped this week, emergency teams have still struggled to contain the fires because of the remote and mountainous terrain.

This photo comes from the northwest of Spain this morning, where helicopters are continuing to dump water on the fires.

(11:28 a.m. EDT) ICYMI: SpaceX Falcon 9 Launches US Space Force's X-37B

From producer Carmen Molina:

Check out these great pictures from last night's Falcon 9 launch of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle's eighth mission to orbit:

And one spectacular video from its landing at LZ-2:

(11:11 a.m. EDT) Long Island Beaches Closed to Swimmers Today

From producer Carmen Molina:

Due to unsafe surf conditions and flooding caused by Hurricane Erin, New York State Parks announced via X that swimming is prohibited today at Atlantic Ocean state park beaches on Long Island. Officials advised park visitors to obey all instructions from lifeguards and park staff as conditions are continuously evaluated.

(10:49 a.m. EDT) Erin Created A Swath Of Cooler Water Along Its Track

Hurricane Erin created a swath of cooler sea surface temperatures due to a process called upwelling

From meteorologist Sara Tonks:

Even if we hadn't been tracking Hurricane Erin, you can still see its path on a specific type of map. Specifically, a sea surface temperature map.

As Erin moved northward, the strong winds churned up the water column under the storm through a process called upwelling. Strong winds in tropical cyclones churn up seawater along their path, causing cooler water from below to rise and mix with surface water.

The result is a swath of cooler sea surface temperatures trailing behind Hurricane Erin northward through the western Atlantic Ocean.

(10:33 a.m. EDT) Dangerous Heat Grips The West This Weekend

From meteorologist Tiffany Savona:

Dangerous heat will continue in the West this weekend. Dozens of records will be in jeopardy Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Seattle could see highs around 90 degrees and Portland is forecast to hit the triple digits.

The risk for heat-related illnesses will be going up, especially for people who don't have air conditioning. Be sure to stay hydrated, limit time outdoors if possible and keep a close eye on family and friends.

Beware of hidden river dangers this weekend. The cool water is moving fast and this combination could lead to dangerous swimming conditions. Wear a life jacket!

(10:01 a.m. EDT) No Major Damage In Dare County, North Carolina

From senior engagement editor Ron Brackett:

North Carolina's Outer Banks has taken several days of pounding from Hurricane Erin, but the news appears to be good from Dare County, home to communities such as Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills, Buxton and Hatteras.

Dare County Manager Bobby Outten told the there have been no new inlets or significant structural damage to homes or businesses because of the hurricane.

"All in all it's not as bad as it could have been," Outten said. "Hopefully the worst of it is behind us."

(09:32 a.m. EDT) Check Out This Ghostly Tornado

From senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman:

Thursday wasn't all about Erin. Check out this video of a skinny tornado near the border of South Dakota, North Dakota and Minnesota late Thursday afternoon.

Fortunately, no damage or injuries were reported. It just left a spectacular sight of a ghostly white tornado in almost perfect contrast with the darkened sky behind it. Storm chaser Tyler Olson took this incredible photo of the tornado with a rainbow partially visible.

(09:00 a.m. EDT) Erin, Day 12

From senior meteorologist Jonathan Erdman:

Today is Day 12 of Erin since it first became a tropical storm just off the African coast on Aug. 11. It is now gradually becoming "non-tropical" as it zooms away from the U.S.

But that doesn't mean its impacts are over. We just had another high tide along the East Coast this morning. Another high tide may trigger additional minor to moderate coastal flooding from North Carolina to Maine.

And the threat from high surf and rip currents will last through the weekend along the East Coast. If the beach isn't closed to swimming, you should probably stay out of the surf through Sunday.

(08:35 a.m. EDT) Weather Plays Games With PGA's Tour Championship

At the PGA Tour's final playoff event of the 2025 season, which is being held at East Lake Golf Course in Atlanta, weather has certainly been a factor. Friday's second round was moved earlier due to the threat of storms later in the day, and on Thursday, hot conditions gave way to the threat of storms near the very end of the first round, leading to a mad dash for Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler, the game's top two golfers, on the 18th green.

(08:00 a.m. EDT) Busy In Margate City

From senior engagement editor Ron Brackett:

Hurricane Erin kept emergency crews in Margate City, New Jersey, busy Thursday.

The Fire Department said in a Facebook post that 18 people and three dogs had to be rescued from flooded vehicles.

Trucks were brought in to evacuate another 34 people who had sought to escape the flooding by going into two restaurants.

Margate City sits on the coast between Atlantic City and Ocean City, New Jersey.
